The Leica look is… real?

Some people see the Leica look, some don’t. I’ve made this blind test using a Leica M10 with a 35mm f/2.4 summicron, a Fujifilm x100f (35mm equivalent fixed lens) and a Canon 6D Mark II with a Canon 16-35 f/2.8L III, of course, at 35mm. All the images are raws converted to jpeg with no retouch. At first, we will see small images together and then bigger.

The columns A, B and C show nine different situations shot with the three cameras (shot with the same settings and AWB) and the game here is try to find the pictures shot with the Leica equipment. What do you need to search for? Well, people say that the Leica look is in the lenses so you have to look for a 3D pop, microcontrast, the ‘Leica colors’ and so on. Could you spot the Leica look? START!!!

Columns A, B and C

1/80 sec, f/4.5 ISO 200

1/80, f/2.8 ISO 80
1/100, f/2.8 ISO 250
1/125, f/11 ISO 100
1/160, f/2.8 ISO 100
1/100, f/11 ISO 100
1/100, f/5.6 ISO 100
1/250, f/2.8 ISO 100
1/60, f/2.8 ISO 1250

I know the images could be too small for this purpose so let’s see them again bigger and one by one

GAME OVER!

What are your conclusions? Could you spot it? Finally, I will provide the solutions but before you see them, please, don’t lie to yourself when buying photo gear. Nowadays, cameras are very capable and you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars/euros/yens for getting good image quality. For me, the most important thing in a camera is a not intrusive camera, fast, being a joy when using it, portable, discreet. Definitely, an extension of my hand and eye, and that’s the reason I always take the M10 with me when doing street photography. This is how I get the Leica look.

SOLUTIONS:
Column A is Fujifilm x100f
Column B is Leica M10
Column C is Canon 6D Mark II
